NIT Director's Resignation Declined

HRD Minister said the Director was forced to resign under pressure, and that such a resignation was not acceptable.

27th Mar, 2010: Three days after Y V Rao, the Director of the National Intitute Of Technology (NIT), Warangal, resigned as a result of student agitations that began on Monday this week, the Minister of State for Human Resource Development (Higher Education) Daggubati Purandeswari refused to acknowledge the resignation.

Requesting Y V Rao to take a leave for a while, she said the Director was forced to resign under pressure, and that such a resignation was not acceptable. She also said that the government will take a stance on the matter after all records are analysed.

Y V Rao had been officiating as NIT Director for the past 4 years, and is facing several allegations, including those of corruption and of irregularities in the administration. He was also accused of filing ragging cases against students from the Telangana region.

Students then resorted to mass protests, demanding that Rao, along with in-charge registrar ASP Rao, resign.

NIT Warangal director, registrar quit after students' protest

The director and the registrar of the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Andhra Pradesh's Warangal town have announced their decision to quit following massive protests by students who alleged embezzlement of funds.

Director Y V Rao and in-charge registrar C S P Rao announced their resignations late Wednesday after three hours of protests by students.

Tension prevailed on the NIT campus as over 5,000 students laid siege to the director's office demanding his resignation over the alleged misappropriation of Rs.40 crore allotted by the union human resource development (HRD) ministry for providing basic amenities.

C S P Rao also announced his decision to tender his resignation in the wake of students' protest.

The students complained about the steep and unilateral increase in fees, absence of toilets for girl students on the campus, poor quality of food being served at the hostels and severe shortage of drinking water.

The students made the director stand for three hours late Wednesday and shot him 40 questions in the presence of media persons.

Rao had no answers but sought a week's time to set things right. However, students were unrelenting on their demand that he quit immediately.

Bowing to the pressure, he wrote a resignation letter addressed to NIT Chairman Deekshitulu, handed them over to students and walked out of the campus.

It was not immediately clear if their resignations under pressure would be valid and accepted by higher authorities.

Various students' groups had been protesting against both the director and the registrar for last four days. The allegations that the director was biased against Telangana students only added fuel to the fire as pro-Telangana students' outfits also joined the protests.

NIT Warangal, formerly known as Regional Engineering College (REC), ranked among the top 10 technology institutes in the country. It celebrated its golden jubilee in 2008.

It was on Oct 10, 1959 that India's first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru had laid the foundation stone for REC, Warangal, one of the RECs set up across the country for technical advancement and promotion of national integration.

It was jointly funded and managed by central and state governments till 2003 when the HRD ministry took a decision to take over all the RECs, rename them as National Institute of Technology and convert them to deemed universities.

YV Rao of NIT Warangal Says he didn't resign

The maverick director of the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Warangal, Mr YV Rao who signed his signature on a blank paper yesterday and handed it over to the students saying that it is his resignation letter has changed his tune.

Yesterday night he got admitted to a hospital in Hanmakonda with high BP. Then speaking to the media from his bed he said that he didn't resign from his post and signed on his resignation letter because the students refused to let him go outside the auditorium when the discussion was taking place of his irregularities.

The students have been complaining about the steep and unilateral increase in fees, absence of toilets for girl students on the campus, poor quality of food being served at the hostels and severe shortage of drinking water.

The internal bickering has been brewing for a long time with teaching, non-teaching and students frustrated with themanagement of the Director and Registrar. The present state of affairs is unprecedented in the institution, acclaimed all over the country for being the first Regional Engineering College known for its quality of education. Senior facultymembers feared that reputed companies would back out from campus recruitment because of the alleged financial scandal.

Beleaguered NIT director quits

In a dramatic turn of events, Y. Venkateswara Rao, director, National Institute of Technology (NIT), announced his resignation after he was questioned by NIT students over mismanagement and fund misuse allegations during an open meeting at NIT auditorium on Wednesday evening.

Mr Venkateswara Rao and registrar C.S.P Rao, stood speechless when NIT Students’ Council members bombarded them with questions during the marathon three-hour open meeting at the NIT auditorium, which was packed to capacity to hear Mr Rao’s responses over a host of allegations surrounding NIT.

After Mr Rao failed to respond to any of the questions put forward by the NIT Student Council leaders, all the 4,000-odd students began shouting.

As mediapersons were also present in full numbers, Mr Rao announced his resignation from the podium of NIT auditorium at 6.15 pm, with NIT registrar, who initially tried to defuse the situation, standing as mute spectator.

The allegations against Mr Rao, said NIT Student Council president V. Ankith Reddy, relates to gross neglect in providing basic infrastructure to students.

The students also levelled allegations against Mr Rao claiming that he was involved in a scam involving Rs 60 crores, given by HRD ministry for NIT development activities.

Beginning with the issue of quality of food served at NIT’s Food Court to decreasing student-faculty ratio, the student leaders, cornered Mr Rao on other issues.

The NIT director ducked all questions put before him by the students. He went silent when NIT girl students, who were also present in full strength, asked him to explain as to why there were no ladies toilets for them.

“There is no water to drink nor is there any in the toilets in all the classrooms. We just have to depend on borewell water,” said a student.

While others sought answers why student-faculty ratio had come down to 1:37 in electrical department as against the required 1:12. Interestingly, while the open discussion was going on inside the auditorium, a few NIT students were seen collecting donations from students so that they can plead their case before NIT Board of Governors meeting, which is scheduled on 26 March in New Delhi.

Warangal NIT Director Scam

YV Rao, the disgraced director of the prestigious National Institute of Technology (NIT) Warangal who has allegedly siphoned off around 60 crores meant for NIT has offered to resign from his post.

Today he had to face lot of unanswerable questions from the NIT students and at last he let his signature of a blank paper and gave it to the students and asked them to treat it as his resignation letter.

Yesterday about 2,000 students residing in various hostels on the campus came out openly alleging large scale misappropriation of public funds by director Y.V. Rao. The students alleged there was no water supply on the campus and the food was of very poor quality which forced nearly 600 students go out everyday.

The students allege that a building of 1000 beds was given for construction to Nagarjuna constructions for 70 crores while the building could have been easily built with just 15-20 crores. “The director is supreme in all matters. He takes unilateral decisions and snubs whoever questions him,” the students allege.

The students also alleged that since the past few months the illegal activities of the director have grown exponentially and he has amassed huge funds.

It is nice to see that the students are not prepared to let corruption take place in the campus said the local leaders present there.

MUNERA Day 2

Reporters: Bittu and Nanhu

The action started today in the field with the Shot-Put events where the winners beat the others by comfortable margins. Keerti Kodali from Civil and Zain from ECE took the top honours.

In the Football matches, Meta beat Chemical comfortably with a final score of 4-0. Meta was more dominant and had better ball control. The goals were scored by R. Vivek, Anurag and Sumit. On the other hand, the match between ECE and Mech was more exciting. Mech took the lead in the first half. ECE equalized when a kick by Fahid found the net in the second half. Vignesh from ECE scored deftly in a corner taken by Nazir to help ECE win 2-1.

In Cricket, EEE won against Biotech in sudden death when the scores were tied at 74. Srujan from EEE was declared Man of the Match for bowling figures of 4 for 5. In the other match, where rain played spoil sport, Chem won against Meta as the game was decided taking run rate into account. The bowlers dominated again as Ravinder from Chem was awarded Man of the Match for bowling figures of 4 for 11.

On the Basketball court, after CSE had a comfortable lead in the first quarter, a resilient Biotech took charge of the match to win the closely contested game 18-16. In the game between Mech and ECE, the ECE team lead by Richy scored consistently and won 28-16.

In the Indoor Stadium, there was a lot of activity as the Badminton games were in progress. In the best of 3, Keerti and Linnet from Civil thrashed Mech 2-0. Meta on the other hand had a more difficult task on their hands. After a game score at 0-1, Sejal from ECE equalized the score easily. But in the end Meta had the last laugh as they beat ECE comfortably in the decider.

The boys from CSE and Civil had everything going their way in Badminton. The winning team from CSE comprising of Ajay, Pranav, Vijay, Kranthi and Sandeep won against ECE with a 3-0 whitewash. The Civil team bolstered by the efforts of Anoop, Shyanthan, Raghu and Sumanth repeated the feat as they massacred Meta. The PG boys had a relatively contrasting match-up with EEE as they clinched the decider to win 3-2.

MUNERA Day 1

MUNERA – the nine day inter-branch sports festival at NIT Warangal kick started today. Girls from the different branches lead their contingents in a colourful march past in the Stadium.

Prof. Kameshwar Rao, who kindly consented to be the Chief Guest for the inaugural, was all praise for the Core Committee of MUNERA for taking the pains in organizing the festival of this scale. While he was pleased that MUNERA takes its inspiration from the sports in ancient Rome, he cautioned that all games must be played fairly, upholding the values of true sportsmanship. Other guests at the inaugural including the Dean of the Student Affairs, Prof. IAK Reddy were thrilled to see that sports was finally getting the attention it deserves in the all-round development of the students and hoped that MUNERA would enjoy the success achieved by Technozion and Spring Spree. After Prof. Ravi Kumar gave the oath to the student coordinators for the games, it was time for the sportsmen to prove their mettle on the field.

The first games of MUNERA were played in the Basketball court. There was a huge turnout and all the benches were taken by supporters. This reporter was amazed to see the enthusiasm and had to stand to take notes. J Chemical dominated the first match against Meta. Rohan, who scored 10 points for Chemical, was the star of the match. Chemical won the match comfortably 18-10.

The second match of the day between Civil and EEE was more exciting. Supporters from both branches were on their feet during the entire match trying to motivate their players in what was to be a very thrilling match. There were no points scored in the first quarter and it was difficult to say who would have the last laugh. At the end of the third quarter, with Civil trailing 16-20, Anup and his teammates fought back till the scores were levelled at 24-24. Both teams strained every nerve, but Civil was pipped at the post by a two pointer from Sunit of EEE to seal the match. EEE won the nail biter with a final score of 26-25.

MUN - KEY

It is good to see that NIT MUN is back again this year .Unusual as it may seem ,it was surprising indeed to see that atleast 40 delegates ‘did’ turn up for the conference .As expected the delegate of India did turn up late for the conference .The conference did exhibit formality and substance with a dash of humour here and there .

Delegates of Pakistan ,Israel at times made sure to break the ice built up in the conference room .Israel kept on claiming that they do not have any nuclear weapons , but we know the truth :P . India and Pakistan buried the hatchet and decided to work against the delegate of U.S.A. (they might have forgot the fact that they are good allies of U.S.A. ).

The delegate of Pakistan seems to be having his share of fun .The delegate was raising his placard for every speech and comment made during the conference .Fed up with the delegate, the chair kicked him out of the conference for 3 minutes ,but he was back within 1 minute ; now that’s a mystery.

We also noticed Father Ryan, the delegate from Vatican City ,going around preaching religion to other delegates until the delegate of Afghanistan said he would blow up the Father.

Imagine a scenario where a pack of wolves is tearing up a cute little bunny; that was the atmosphere at the conference during discussion of the first topic “changing the NPT”. Pakistan, Iran and north Korea (he was crazy) on one side and U-SUK alliance (humorous name for the US and UK alliance) on the other were the main fighters seen .in the end the latter just couldn’t handle “AXIS OF EVIL”.

We noticed that during every unmoderated caucus, the chair and some delegates along with a press corp. member were seen going to an isolated area to have a breath of FRESH air ( if you know what we mean )!!

During the afternoon session ,the secretary general alerted the committee of a crisis in the south Asia, where it seemed India attacked Pakistan .How ironical it may seem that during the morning session India was supporting Pakistan. Well the crisis resulted in the verbal bludgeoning of the Indian delegate. The editorial has just this to say :”PEACE BE UPON HIS HEAVILY BATTERED SOUL!!”.

Well how boring the conference maybe in the end it was spiced up by the declaration of the best dressed delegate. The declaration of the best dressed female delegate :P; actually set out fireworks in the conference(just humour here).

With this tumultuous event lets hope that for the upcoming SPRINGSPREE NITMUN, there will be more participation from the students and most important of all… better food!!

NITW CANTEEN Sealed

It was Republic Day, one of the most important days in the Indian calender, literally.
What do students expect? Sweets or some flavoured drink or a packet of Mixture or atleast decent food to compensate hunger of students..
but it was all going the other way round at NITW canteen. Guess what!

Stale rice, rice cooked on 25th Jan. was used to prepare fried rice on 26th Jan. at NITW canteen, 'the food hub for half of the campus'...

Hopefully the canteen will be reopened within a month, with better menu and quality.
